THE MARKET THEATRE presents THE BAXTER THEATRE CENTRE'S
Production of
WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF
By Edward Albee With Sean Taylor and Fiona Ramsay Lighting Design by Mannie Manim Directed by Janice Honeyman After a successful run at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and Cape Town's Baxter Theatre, Edward Albee's award-winning masterpiece Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is coming to the Market Theatre. The play opens in the Main Theatre on Thursday 09th August. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a caustic and humorous portrayal of love in a marriage. Janice Honeyman tackles this complex but entertaining black comedy with a formidable foursome starring Fiona Ramsay and Sean Taylor as the bitter but erudite older couple, two of the most famous roles written for the stage, while Nicholas Pauling and Erica Wessels play the unsuspecting young couple. Raw nerves and emotional brutality fuel the fire when a quintessentially dysfunctional couple, well into their middle-ages, tear savagely at each other to cover up the emotional baggage which they both carry. In the play, Martha and George invite a new professor and his wife to their house following a party. Nick is a Biology professor and Honey is his mousy, brandy-abusing wife. Once at home, Martha and George continue drinking and engage in relentless, scathing verbal and sometimes physical abuse in front of Nick and Honey. Nick and Honey are simultaneously fascinated and embarrassed. They stay even though the abuse turns periodically towards them as well. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was first performed in New York in October of 1962, and it captured the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and the Tony Award for the 1962-63 season.
