A voice on
the inner city

Neil Fraser An insider's perspective on Johannesburg, written by prominent city champion Neil Fraser.

THE inner city is not just the historical centre of Johannesburg but is also its symbolic, economic and cultural centre - it is of strategic importance to the city.

And boosting the economic and social development of the inner city is key to cementing Johannesburg's position in the country and on the continent.

In his speech at a crucial summit focusing on inner city regeneration in May 2007, Executive Mayor Amos Masondo said: "I have been very clear about what I want to see happen in the inner city.

"Within the next few years, by the time of the 2010 Soccer World Cup™ and the end of this council's term of office, we want the complete transformation of our inner city. We want this inner city to be clean and green. We want it to be safe for residents and visitors. We want a proper balance between residential development and business development. We want it to be a desirable location where both the wealthy, and those who are just getting on to the ladder of prosperity, can live, work and enjoy themselves in harmony."
