Vegetarian restaurants
Vegetarians are treated in an off-hand fashion generally by restaurateurs everywhere, who resent us for the challenges we pose. We're fobbed off with indifferent pasta dishes, or boring salads, or “vegetarian burgers”, likely cooked on the same grill as the meat versions. But things are looking up in Johannesburg. As more young people turn their backs on meat for health, beauty, religious or ethical reasons, so the demand for good vegetarian food is growing – and new restaurants are opening to meet it.

  • Shayona: Famous for its first-rate vegetarian curries and huge assortment of sweetmeats
  • Fruits and Roots: The oldest and in many ways still the best
  • Greenlands: On sunny days, there's nowhere better
