Check with City Power when your meters will be read

City Power, Joburg's electricity utility, has announced the dates on which meters will be read for the rest of the year . It has a list of suburbs and dates on which its four contractors will be visiting homes. Electricity meters must be read to ensure houses are billed correctly.

Ditshego Mampa, City Power's meter-reading supervisor, has called on Joburgers to co-operate with the contractors and phone the company or the reader assigned to their area if they have any queries.

"Give them access," she has urged.

Customers can make arrangements with the relevant contractors to have their meters read in the evening, she says. They can also let the readers know if they will not be at home on their reading day.

The four contractors are:

  • Rubbytad Meter Readers, which will cover the western and southern parts of the city such as Roodepoort, Florida, Helderkruin, Jeppestown, Eldorado Park and Glenvista;
  • Global Meter Readers, which will cover the area from Village Deep, City and Suburban and Selby, to parts of Lenasia and Nancefield;
  • Micromega Revenue Management Solutions; which will cover the area stretching from Windsor Glen and Cresta, to Witkoppen and Dainfern, from Killarney and Yeoville, to Sandringham and Kew; and
  • African Meter Reading Contractors, which will cover the region that links Northcliff and Mayfair in the west to Braamfontein and Industria in the south, Sunninghill in the north and Alexandra in the east.

City Power has issued a code of conduct for meter readers. In terms of the code, readers should be dressed in uniform for the customers to allow them into their houses. The uniform must have the company's logo on the front and City Power's logo on the back.

Readers should produce their identity cards so that their company details can be verified through City Power's call centre on 011 375 5555. Contractors must also deliver notification on future meter reading dates. Mampa says customers can contact City Power's call centre if there are problems.

Two contractors will also be sent to do general investigations of meters - Imvusa and Owethu will check meters that City Power suspects are faulty.
