Young artists are urged to attend the Gerard Sekoto Youth Festival, where they will learn more about breaking into the art world.
The annual Gerard Sekoto Youth Festival takes place at the Johannesburg Art Gallery
THE life of one of South Africa's most famous artists will be celebrated at the annual Gerard Sekoto Youth Festival. Various topics relating to art will be discussed at the festival, to be held on Sunday, 16 December at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. First held in 1991, the festival attracts more than 700 youngsters each year. Young people between the ages of eight and 25 are encouraged to attend this year, and experts will be on hand to answer their art-related questions. Topics that will be discussed include Breaking into the art world; How the youth becomes the nerve of the nation through artistic development; Pricing art; Art economics; and Careers in art. The festival is held to nurture the memory of Gerard Sekoto, the South African artist who lived in exile in Paris. Sekoto died in the French capital in 1993. Activities include mural and face painting, T-shirt printing, clay modelling, book making, a video on Sekoto's life, puppet making, film screening, tours, drama and a young artists' conference. The conference will focus on questions asked by young artists throughout the years. Experts will give presentations on a range of topics, followed by question-and-answer sessions. This year the focus will be on children's homes and institutions and Nkosi's Haven in Berea, Christ Church Care Centre in Hillbrow and Orlando Children's Home in Soweto are some of those invited to the festival. Activities will start at 10am and run until 4pm at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. The gallery is in Joubert Park, on the corner of Klein and King George streets.
