THE South African Ballet Theatre (SABT) opens its first season for 2008 with the popular ballet Sleeping Beauty, on stage from 28 March to 13 April at the Civic Theatre in Braamfontein.
The SABT is one of the country's largest professional ballet companies. Sleeping Beauty is a magical fairytale about a beautiful princess, an evil fairy and a handsome prince, whose kiss awakens the princess from a hundred year sleep.
Performances will feature the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO), playing live. At present, the orchestra is accompanying The Nutcracker, which is being danced at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.
It has partnered with the SABT to offer its audience quality music, according to Shadrack Bokaba, the JPO's managing director. "Music forms an integral part of the ballet; in fact, without it, there will be no dancing."
He explains that the partnership will lower the costs of putting on ballets, saying that traditional ballet performances have become expensive over the years, forcing ballet companies to use recorded music.
Sleeping Beauty, the fairytale, was written by French author Charles Perrault. The ballet premiered in St Petersburg, in Russia, in 1890. It has since become one of the world's most popular ballets.
The SABT also runs a ballet school, and its students are able to take part in performances, including Coppélia, La Sylphide, Carmen, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
Sleeping Beauty is on at the Civic Theatre complex in Braamfontein from 28 March to 13 April. Tickets range in price from R100 to R240, with half-price tickets for the 8pm performance on Saturday, 29 March.
In addition, on Tuesday, 8 April the show will start at 11am and tickets will be R65. There is a 10 percent discount for block booking of 10 or more people. Bookings can be made through Edgar Moagi on 011 877 6898 or from Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000 or through the Computicket website.
