If it's summer, it's time for the Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts in Emmarentia.
THIS weekend, the banks of the Emmarentia Dam will resonate with music as artists in the Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts promise to serenade fans with sublime tunes under a scorching sun.
The sunset concerts, which boast a variety of locally and internationally acclaimed musicians, will be held every Saturday until 15 March at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. They start at 3pm, although the gates open at 2pm, and run until 6pm. The concert series was kick-started last week on Saturday 2 February, at the same venue.
This week the Ok GO, The Parlotones, Fokofpolisiekar, Crash Car Burn and Rethabile Brass Band will be featured.
Insurance company Old Mutual and OppiKoppi Productions sponsor the series.
"The concept behind the Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts series is to bring a new flavour to entertainment and performances in the summer months," said Karlien Kuun, the PRO for OppiKoppi Productions.
The series is hosted annually by Old Mutual in Johannesburg and Cape Town. During the concerts, patrons can spend a lazy afternoon in a beautiful setting while enjoying a picnic with good friends while being entertained till sunset, noted Kuun.
Artists lined up to perform at next week's concert include Vusi Mahlasela, the Rethabile Brass Band and Ernie Smith.
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are closed to the general public on concert dates from 9am. Parking is available for concert-goers on Thomas Bowler Road only. A safe play area for children accompanying adults to the concert is always available. Concert-goers are not permitted to start fires, braai or bring glasses; there is a cash bar open on the day.
Patrons are urged to buy tickets beforehand from Ticket Connection, Mr Price stores or online from Oppikoppi.
Because last week's concert was disrupted by rain, organisers said that if patrons buy ticket in advance, any of the pre-sale tickets may be re-used at any one of the other remaining upcoming shows which have similar monetary value.
Tickets are R100 for adults and R50 for children and students with student cards.
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are at the Emmarentia Dam in Emmarentia. If you are coming along the N1 South, take the Beyers Naude Drive offramp, turn left and go straight towards Roosevelt Park. If you are coming along the N1 North, take the Beyers Naude Drive offramp, turn right and go towards Roosevelt Park. The Emmarentia Dam is opposite West Park Cemetery.
