Be it breakfast in bed, a concert at the zoo or a meal at a restaurant, Mother's Day is the time to thank all our moms. Go on, she deserves it.
Mothers can watch the Rocky Horror Show special for free on Mothers' Day
IT'S Mother's Day on Sunday, 11 May, and it is time to spoil your moms. The red carpet will be laid out for moms at venues across the city, many of which are planning special treats on the day. First stop is the Victory Theatre, which has a Mother's Day Rocky Horror Show special. All mothers can watch the show for free on the day, although booking is essential, on 011 728 9603. It's a fantastic cult romp through the time warp, with Brendan van Rhyn as Frank'n'furter, Tamara Dey as Magenta, Ryan Flynn as Brad, and Lyall Ramsden as Riff Raff. Before the show starts, give your mother a break from the kitchen and take her for a meal at the theatre's restaurant, where the menu has a wide variety of dishes, ranging from African to Italian. The Victory Theatre is on Louis Botha Avenue, in Houghton. For more information, phone the venue on 011 728 9603.
Concert at the zoo Pack a picnic basket and a blanket. The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra will perform a range of timeless classics as well as a selection of current tunes under the experienced baton of orchestra leader and conductor Richard Cock. Soloists include Thabo Mdluli, Sisters Sentimental and Nicholas Nicholaidis, among others. "The concert is a firm favourite with our listeners because it provides people with an opportunity to get out of the house for the day and into the autumn sun, where they can spend time with friends and family in a safe and secure environment," says Talk Radio 702 station manager, Pheladi Gwangwa. The radio station partners with the zoo in organising the concert. It begins at 9am and runs until 3pm; entrance is R21 a person. The Johannesburg Zoo is in Upper Park Drive, Forest Town. For further information, contact Sandra Hlungwani on 011 646 2000 extension 225.

Theatre Dinner For One is set in an old English mansion, where the last remaining member of the family, Miss Sophie, is celebrating her 90th birthday. Wilson Dunster is the butler and Elize Cawood is Miss Sophie-same-procedure-as-last-year-James; Andre Stolz directs. "You can come and enjoy lunch with us in our beautiful gardens, and we will together have fun on Mother's Day with Dinner for One," says Chris Beukes, the show co-ordinator. There are two shows on the day, the first at 12.30pm and the second at 4pm. Tickets are R70 each, and lunch is R135 a head. And then there is dessert. Try aged goats' cheese mousse or Lindt bitter chocolate fondant. Breakfast is R175 per head for adults and R85 per head for children under the age of 12. Lunch is R255 per head for adults and R100 per head for children under the age of 12. The Hyatt Regency hotel is also focusing on brunch.
