AFRICA on Screen is a celebration of African film and culture. Now in its 3rd year the festival continues to grow and in 2008 is proud to be a national festival with screenings at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank and Cavendish, Ster Kinekor Junction at Maponya Mall and Festival Mall, and also with free screenings at Museum Africa.

The festival aims to showcase the best in new and quality African films within mainstream cinema environments, while also reaching out to audiences with educational and classic African films. This year's festival includes over 24 films, from animation to documentaries and no less than 10 South African premieres of films from across the continent.

Museum Africa in Newtown will also play host to a range of interactive and fascinating workshops that will be of interest to the industry and the public alike.

Fri 23rd 11:00 Director's Round Table. The first workshop of the festival will be an exciting and engaging discussion between a host of African filmmakers from across the continent. South African directors Vincent Moloi, Michael Rix, and Darrell Roodt will be joined by Guinean director of Sur les Traces du Bembeya Jazz, Abdoulaye Diallo, American based director of Africa Unite, Stephanie Black and A Winter Tales' Frances Ann Soloman.  The directors will speak of their own experiences in filmmaking and on the state of African cinema. This session will be of interest to filmmakers and the general public alike.

Tues 27th 14:00: Film & Xenophobia & Migration: Following the screening of Zimbabwe at 12:30, which deals specifically with issues around migration, there will be a round table discussion on xenophobia and migration. After the session, there will be a screening of Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon another South African film which deals with refugees and xenophobia.

Director of Zimbabwe Darrel Roodt will be joined by representatives of the International Organisation for Migration in a discussion that will be of interest to all.

Tues 27th 14:30 (NB: VENUE AT STER KINEKOR JUNCTION AT MAPONYA MALL) Talk it Out: Young Black Men in South Africa: Following the screening of A Winter Tale, the themes of the film will be discussed with the director Frances Anne Solomon, and representatives from Men Against Women Abuse, and the Moroka Trauma Unit. This workshop, supported by the Canadian High Commission will look at the situation of young black men in their communities. 

Wed 28th 14:00: Animation Workshop: Following a screening of the claymation feature Tengers and the CGI Backyard shorts at 12:30, Director Michael Rix and producers and directors from the Anamazing Workshop will lead a workshop to discuss animation in South African film. Tengers is the first claymation film feature film to be produced in South Africa and Michael Rix will discuss the reasons for his use of this medium.

The Anamazing Workshop are leaders in CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) in South Africa and during this workshop they will both discuss the role of CGI in filmmaking here in South Africa, as well as look at some of the technical issues related to the field. This workshop is not to be missed for any professional or aspiring animators.

Thurs 29th: 14:00: African Views on African Cinema: Following the screening of Heritage Africa at 12:30, there will be a round table discussion on African views on African cinema. A host of South African directors and film industry experts will host an interactive discussion of the current state of African cinema from a uniquely African perspective.
