Safety is a priority during the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk, and roads around Emmarentia will be closed to traffic while the walkers stroll past.
Walk the Talk provides a festive atmosphere for walkers and motorists are urged to stay away
A NUMBER of roads in and around Emmarentia and Greenside will be closed to traffic before dawn on Sunday, 27 July for the annual Discovery 702 Walk the Talk. Motorists have been warned to plan their routes carefully if they expect to be in the vicinity of St Mark's Sports Club, opposite Melville Koppies in Emmarentia. "Discovery and Talk Radio 702 will be pulling out all the stops to ensure the event runs smoothly; this will include implementing several road closures on the day," says the public relations and communications co-ordinator, Vanessa Papas. Walk the Talk marshals, metro police and traffic officials will co-ordinate the closures. "Closures will be effective half an hour before each walk begins. Roads will be reopened immediately after every intersection is clear of walkers, therefore allowing the least possible time of closures." Closures will be rolling, beginning at 4am, and will be over by 2pm. However, there may be delays at certain times because of the volume of people on the roads. The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is now in its eighth year. It is endorsed by Executive Mayor Amos Masondo and the City of Johannesburg, which has given all the necessary permissions.
Traffic will be diverted to ensure that 702 Walk the Talk takes place in a safe environment
A comprehensive list of all roads closures is on the Talk Radio 702 website. There is also a detailed route map and other related information. All queries relating to the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk and the associated road closures - either before the event or on the day - should be sent to the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk office on 011 463 2743 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . As usual, the walk begins and ends at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. There are four different walks, with staggered starting times - 30 kilometres, 15 kilometres, eight kilometres and five kilometres, beginning at 7.30am, 9am and 11am, respectively. Entries have closed, and the organisers are tallying the number who will take part. Secure parking will be available at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, on Thomas Bowler Avenue, which is off Beyers Naude Drive. However, park-and-ride facilities - at Nasrec, Northgate and Bez Valley Park - have been planned to get walkers to the park relaxed and on time. And organisers have ensured that the streets will be thoroughly cleaned up after the walkers.
