LEGENDARY soul and R&B crooner Anita Baker will be in Johannesburg for one night only, and organisers promise the concert will be a dazzling, intimate indoor affair, with faultless acoustics.

Baker will perform at the Nasrec Expo Centre, in the southwest of the city, on Sunday, 24 August from 6pm as part of her worldwide tour, A Night with Anita Baker.

Born on 26 January 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, in the United States, Baker started singing in a Baptist church choir at the age of 12, and catapulted to stardom a short four years later, after joining the popular band, Humanity.

She released her debut solo album, Anita Baker, in 1979. The album contained hits like Ready For Your Love and I Just Wanna Be Your Girl. So far, she has bagged eight Grammy Awards, and has cemented herself as a leading songwriter. Her albums have reached multi-platinum status.

According to the organisers - Zikmo Promotions and T-Musicman - Baker's music appeals to soul and R&B fans.

"Anita's music is timeless," notes Mantwa Chinoamadi, T-Musicman's general manager. Baker's songs have a contemporary feel and tune to them, and are relevant to the present day listener, she explains. "Anita has many popular songs from her platinum-selling albums."

She is expected to perform classic tunes from her many hit albums, such as My Funny Valentine, My Favourite Things, Giving You The Best That I Got, Just Because, Fairy Tales and many more.

Here albums include Songstress, Rapture, Givin You The Best That I Got, Rhythm Of Love and I Apologize.

The venue
Chinoamadi notes that Joburg's Expo Centre is a world-class facility, suitable to host such a superlative show. "The Expo Centre's Hall 6 is an awesome venue with superb acoustics."

It has a high-tech sound system and cinema-style seats, "so that all show goers have an intimate and unforgettable experience".

Craig Newman, the chief executive officer of the Expo Centre, shares her sentiments. "The Expo Centre has been hosting music and cultural events, both indoor and outdoor, since [it] was built. We are proud to be hosting Anita Baker for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and are confident that the organisers have, indeed, made the right choice in this venue," he says.

Tickets for the concert are selling fast and golden circle tickets are almost sold out. Fans are urged to buy their tickets early to avoid a last-minute rush.

Prices range from R250 to R500, and are available at Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000, or on the Computicket website.

Companies and groups can book hospitality packages, which include VIP rooms, dinner, bars, golden circle tickets, and VIP toilets and parking. They cost R1 995. To book this package contact Gareth Nel on 082 825 4848 or Tembi Mahambehlala on 011 326 0141.
