Matodzi Gift Ramashia PDF Print E-mail

MATODZI GIFT RAMASHIA was born in Tchiawelo, Soweto and started writing poetry in 1999.Inspired by his high school teacher, Mr. Hove to write in his own voice he began to showcase his talent at high school events. Later he began to share his poetry with a larger audience of esteems poets.

He has since performed at various shows in Johannesburg, Durban, and Mpumalanga. Some of the events in which he has perfumed include the annual Botsotso poetry festival, the Jozi spoken word festival, and Soweto arts festival among others.

Matodzi recently had Gauteng in tizzy when he first recited his controversial  poem "I am not going back to the township" on the YFM poetry show in 2006. The poem received great critical acclaim from listeners and became a regular feature of the YFM Kamakazi heat show, hosted by Rudeboypaul.

In April 2008 this provocative linguist competed with a number of formidable poets and came first, winning the opportunity to represent South Africa at the Music Mayday Annual festival in Tanzania, performing along artist from Ethiopia, Holland and Tanzania. His poetry is a fusion of his tsotsitaal, English, Zulu and Sotho interspersed into an uncompromising depiction of township life, exploring themes such as HIV and AIDS, Unemployment, and crime .He is currently living in Newtown, Johannesburg.
