Joburg Literary Festival

JoLife 2008

THIS is the 50th anniversary of Chinua Achebe's iconic Things Fall Apart.

As part of the celebrations, the City of Johannesburg's Library and Information Services, in partnership with the Sowetan Aggrey Klaaste Nation-Buiding Project, are running a competition for young writers.

The theme is "Traditions I hold dear", and is intended to inspire young people to write about traditions that guide them in the way they live their lives and interact with others.

There are two categories:

  • Short story
  • Age Categories:

    • 13 – 15 yrs
    • 16 – 19 yrs
    • 20 – 25 yrs

    Criteria:

    • Length should be between 1800 – 2000 words
    • Originality of thought and no translations from other sources
    • Submissions must stick to the theme
    • Correct usage of grammar in the chosen language
    • Only typed or neat hand written scripts will be accepted
    • Adherence to a good story format
    • The competition is open to the residents of Johannesburg only
  • Poetry
  • Ages Categories:

    • 13 – 15 yrs
    • 16 – 19 yrs
    • 20 – 25 yrs

    Criteria:

    • Poetry should "stay true to the genre"
    • Maximum of 700 words
    • No profanity
    • Originality of thought and no translations from other sources
    • Correct usage of grammar in the chosen language
    • Only typed or neat hand written scripts will be accepted
    • The competition is open to the residents of Johannesburg only

    The closing date for submissions is 31 October 2008, with nominees being announced in February 2009 and the awards being made in March 2009.
