Learning the broadcast medium

Visual art, dance, crafts, design, filmmaking - these and other forms of art make up the citywide CIT:Y festival that showcases Johannesburg's up-and-coming young artists.

SOME of Joburg's most creative artists are expected to take part in the annual CIT:Y, which is part of the Arts Alive Festival. A CIT:Y expo will also be in the Youth Zone at the Soweto Festival.

A City initiative, it is supported by cellphone company MTN. CIT:Y runs from Wednesday, 24 September - Heritage Day - to Friday, 31 October at various venues in Johannesburg.

More than 20 educational institutions that specialise in dance, fine art, music, crafts, filmmaking, design and digital arts are expected to participate. The City's director of arts, culture and heritage, Steven Sack, said the purpose of the CIT:Y festival was to showcase and celebrate the achievements of emerging talent.

"Johannesburg is the gateway of Africa's cultural hub and home to a vibrant community of artistic and cultural product. The aim of the CIT:Y festival is to nurture and support cultural heritage development and emerging talent in the city."

The festival will provide information, networking and business opportunities to those in the industry. Participating institutions include the University of the Witwatersrand School of the Arts, University of Johannesburg, Inscape Design College, Market Photo Workshop, Artist Proof Studio and Moving Into Dance Mophatong.

A four-day exhibition will run at the Soweto Festival at the University of Johannesburg from 24 to 27 September. This expo will showcase institutions where arts are taught and the various courses on offer.

At Museum Africa there will a student exhibition, focusing on visual arts, performing arts, broadcasting and audio products and film from 15 - 31 October.

The festival is open to members of the public. All events start at 9am and end at 4.30pm. Admission is free.
