It's a weekend of bliss in Jozi for anyone who loves a good tune - there's Tamia and Eliades Ochoa for starters, and a raft of DJs for some dancing late into the night.
Eliades Ochoa will perform traditional music from Cuba
THE month-long Arts Alive festival draws to a close this weekend in Newtown with a variety of concerts at various venues in Joburg's prime entertainment precinct.
This evening, Canadian R&B sensation Tamia will perform at Mary Fitzgerald Square from 8pm till late. She will share the stage with South Africa's own R&B star, Keabetswe Motsilanyane, known as KB. Tickets for the show go for R150 at the door.
On the same night, the famous Cuban musician, Eliades Ochoa, will perform traditional music from his island homeland, such as sones, guarachas, guajiras and boleros at the Bassline.
Ochoa, whose show starts at 8pm, will be supported by Dr Subramaniun of India and South Africa's Azah. Tickets go for R100 at the door.
Tomorrow - Saturday, 27 September - Tamia will dish up a second helping, again at Mary Fitzgerald Square; across Newtown at the Bassline, Ochoa will also be performing again, this time supported by one of the most influential Xhosa musicians in the country, Camagwini. Both shows start at 8pm.
The party continues in Newtown and Brixton in a programme dubbed "Late-night in Newtown".
At Cappellos, Movimento na Rua, a Brazilian hip-hop act, will belt out tunes at a free show starting at 10pm. Next door, Sophiatown will host Catherine Lambert and Sylvester Mazinyane in another free show.
Over on the corner of Bree and Miriam Makeba streets, Nikki's will host the Robert Bachner Quartet on Friday and Saturday nights. Bachner, one of Austria's most active freelance trombonists, accomplished bandleaders and composers is also a long-time member of the internationally acclaimed Vienna Art Orchestra.
His two free shows, presented by the Austrian embassy, will begin promptly at 10pm.
Dancehall ragga giants Admiral and Jahseed will get people dancing the night away at the House of Nsako in Brixton. The two ragga heavyweights started out playing Thursday nights at the famous Tandoor club in Yeoville in the late 1990s.
And they have played to packed crowds every week since, having just finished a six-year residency at the Horror Cafe in Newtown. Over the years, their night has become a bone fide Joburg legend.
Together with their sound system crew they are known as African Storm and have played extensively in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Admiral and Jahseed's show starts at 10pm on Friday and Saturday at House of Nsako, and entrance to the venue is R50.
Finally, it will be two nights of grooving at Newtown's famous Carfax, where various DJs will take to the stage on Friday and Saturday. Performers include DJ Krush, DJ Kenzhero, Cajus, Tokyo Star DJs and Kid of Doom, among others.
The two shows start promptly at 10pm and entrance is R100 per head.
