The famous tale of the young Arabian and his genie of the lamp has been turned into a musical and is the theatre's year-end production.
Aladdin is a poor boy on the verge of manhood. He has dreams and ambitions, and with the help of the genie of the lamp, wins great riches and the heart and hand of Princess Jasmine.
Keith Smith and Jill Girard are staging and directing the musical. The duo have several successes under their collective belt - musicals Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and Absolutely Fabulously Broadway.
Smith calls Aladdin a timeless story about the bravery and strength of a character that reminds us that the good in people can overcome most things.
The audience can expect an opulent set designed by Marius Boshoff, he says.
"He will use a series of beautiful backdrops and various rostrums to depict the enchanting palace, the dark and eerie dragon's cave and the chaotic laundry. Special lighting effects will be used for Aladdin's flight on the magic carpet and spectacular journey to the roof of the world."
The extravagant costumes, designed by Linda Wilson, will capture the Arabian world in all its splendour.
Girard says everyone is committed to making the show a success. "Their various designated tasks are being executed with enormous enthusiasm and passion. People will not be disappointed. Props, lighting and sound are all being fine-tuned to ensure an outstanding result.
"It is a not-to-be-missed theatre experience for the whole family which will be filled with fun, adventure and magical carpet rides."
Cast members include Dries Botha as Aladdin and Noni Mkhonto as Jasmine. It is Botha's first production at the People's Theatre. He was wicked Aunt Spicker in James and the Giant Peach at the Joburg Promusica Theatre earlier this year.
Botha says he is excited about playing Aladdin, as it is one of his favourite stories.
Mkhonto has been in other productions at the theatre, including Alice in Wonderland, in which she played Alice.
Aladdin is at the People's Theatre from 3 November to 24 December. There will be two shows daily on weekdays at 9am and 11am; and one show on Saturdays and public holidays at 2.30pm. Bookings can be made at the theatre on 011 403 1563 or through Computicket on 011 340 8000 or 083 915 8000, or through the Computicket website.
