SIX Primary Schools from around the City of Johannesburg participated in a drama competition depicting aspects of road safety as well as the promotion of the City's transport values led by councilor Rehana Moosajee the member of the mayoral committee in charge of Transportation in the City of Johannesburg.

The event which is part of the activities of public transport month by the City of Johannesburg's Transportation Department and Johannesburg Roads Agency was the culmination of a month long programme that started on the 4th of October.

The Automobile Association was represented by spokesperson Mr Gary Ronald who was also one of the judges. Other judges included Nzunzu Mambada an artist as well as Ms Ntombi Singo from the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works' road safety department in Gauteng Province.

The event was held at the Roodepoort Civic Theatre from 09h30 to 14h00 today and was graced by the attendance of various councilors, parents, community members and some city officials.

Not only did the participating learners convey their road safety messages accurately through drama but they also displayed huge acting potential which urged the judges to ask the educators to expose the kids to more acting opportunities.

Each participating school won a R10 000 cash prize as well as hampers for each participating learner. The AA pledged also pledged a cash prize for the winning school. An additional prize that was announced for the day included participation in the Pick 'n Pay stay alert stay alive programme.

Participating learners which included children who are differently abled were from the following final short list of schools: Futura Primary, Vukuzenzele Primary, Carter Primary School, Lancaster Primary as well as Phillip Kuschlik Primary School.

A total of 800 schools were initially invited and only 37 finally accepted ending up with a short list of 7 schools of which six participated in the competition. The learners were accompanied by educators, heads of department and school principals.

The event was hailed as a success and is likely to be an annual event.
