THE autumn/winter collections hit the catwalks of Joburg this weekend as Sanlam SA Fashion Week comes to town.

The extravaganza takes place at Turbine Hall in Newtown from 2 to 4 April. Seminars and workshops will be held during the day, with the fashion shows taking place from 5pm.

The workshops will look at the nuts and bolts - or swatches of fabric - of developing small design businesses. The line-up of speakers includes professionals from fields such as retail, marketing, design and craft.

New York-based fashion designer, Albertus Swanepoel, a runner up in the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2008, is one of the guests. Also speaking are Sanlam Cobalt's specialist small business consultant, Gavin Reddy, and Joanne Coelho and Amber Jones from Mr Price's dynamic women's wear team.

Highlights of the event are the interactive workshops, including a jewellery-making session with internationally acclaimed designer, Cari Mari Wilsenach.

Designers Ephraim Molingoana of Ephymol and Karen ter Morszhuizen of Lunar, who headed up a research collaboration between Sanlam South African Fashion Week; GIH Mode, a French design academy; and the Department of Arts and Culture, will talk about their personal experiences as well as about their trip to Paris.

The aim of the initiative was to make the knowledge of the international fashion industry available to South Africans.

Sanlam SA Fashion Week runs from Thursday, 2 April to Sunday, 4 April at Turbine Hall in Newtown. All workshops are open to the public. Workshops and seminars will be during the day, with 12 shows for the autumn/winter collections from 5pm.

Two fashion shows will be held at the Bamboo Centre in Melville. For more information, go to the fashion week website.

Entrance to the workshops ranges in price from R478 to R2 496 each at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or on 011 442 7812.
