The Joburg Zoo will host the local leg of the annual Walk the World to fight hunger among children. Funds raised will go towards the South African Food Bank Network.
THE Johannesburg Zoo will host a global United Nations campaign aimed at fighting poverty in children when it hosts the annual Walk the World, a walk against hunger, on 7 June.
The World Food Programme (WFP), a UN agency, is the driving force behind the initiative. The agency uses the walk to raise funds to fight hunger - and awareness that about 59 million children across the world are going hungry.
Some 71 countries take part. TNT Express, a delivery company, approached the WFP with the idea of the walk eight years ago. "The objective was to shed light on hunger and help to fight it," says the local organiser of the walk, Anusha Bhaga.
It begins in Auckland, in New Zealand, and participants in other countries complete their walks within 24 hours. The South African leg is a 5km route around the Joburg Zoo. Bhaga says organisers are hoping to attract about 1 000 Johannesburg residents. "It will be an exciting walk for them."
Isidingo actress, Hlubi Mboya, who took part in 2008, has confirmed she will do the walk again. She is just one of the well-known personalities expected to take part.
Tickets are R50 for adults, R25 for children aged three to 18 years old; children under three enter for free.
Funds raised through the Johannesburg walk will be donated to the South African Food Bank Network, a national non-profit organisation that provides food assistance to people in need.
