JMPD officials will be out in full force this Easter holiday to curb crime and stop traffic offenders in their tracks.
JOBURG'S metro police will be out in full force during the Easter holidays keeping an ever-vigilant eye on the city's major routes.
From Thursday night, 9 April, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) will be on the roads to ensure that safety and vigilance is enforced.
"Our plans to control traffic have started already but on Thursday night we will intensify the programme," says JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar.
The plans for traffic control include an emphasis on Operation Nomakanjani – a campaign being run by the JMPD to clampdown on reckless and dangerous drivers, and enforcing traffic laws by erecting a number of roadblocks all over Johannesburg.
Metro police will not only enforce traffic laws but will also use roadblocks to combat crime.
Minnaar explains that there will be stop-and-search operations. "Crime prevention will be a big part of the Easter holidays' traffic control operations. "The police will be searching for suspected stolen cars, goods and illegal firearms."
Metro police will be assisted by the City's emergency services.
Although the Emergency Management Services (EMS) will not be on the roads, they will be on stand-by to assist the metro police whenever there is a need.
"We have picked up a trend in the past years and that is people migrate from the city and therefore we will not be on the roads but we will be on stand-by," says Percy Morokane, acting communications manager for the EMS.
