The National Children's Theatre has another classic tale waiting in the
wings: this winter its musical is that fabulous tale of freedom, Pippi Longstocking.
SHE doesn't go to school; no one tells her when to go to bed; she has no chores; and she carries around a suitcase full of gold. Pippi Longstocking is the personified dream every child has of freedom and power.
Pippi lives with her beloved horse and pet monkey, Mr Nilsson, in the town of Villa Villekula, where she does exactly as she pleases.
Pippi - every child's dream of freedom
Long a favourite children's tale, the National Children's Theatre is bringing the story of the girl with striped stockings and unruly pigtails to the stage.
According to Sydwell Koopedi, the theatre's media liaison officer, children in the audience will immediately recognise and identify with Pippi, as well as envy her mischievous adventures. She can outwit, outfight and outrun the police, schoolteachers, and welfare workers. She outwrestles a circus strongman and reduces adults to tatters.
Adapted from the novel by Astrid Lindgren by Thomas W Olson, the music is by Roberta Carlson. The musical teaches children how important self-belief, courage and imagination can be in overcoming feelings of loneliness and rejection.
Pippi Longstocking has a blend of songs, dancing and theatrical fun that makes a charming and highly entertaining adventure for children and their families.
Starting its season on 8 June and ending on 1 August, the musical will run before, during, and after the winter school holidays. During the government school term, performances are on weekdays at 9am and 10.30am. During school holidays, performances are from Mondays to Saturdays, at 10.30am and 2.30pm.
Tickets are R60 for children and R70 for adults. Block bookings are available for schools, groups and birthday parties. Booking is essential and can be made with Sue on 011 484 1584; tickets are also available at Computicket on 083 915 8000.
The National Children's Theatre, which turns 20 this year, is at 3 Junction Avenue, in Parktown.
