Music and fashion, rock ballet and tango, a smattering of contemporary dance, jazz and gymnastics - they are all found in the melting pot of Tango Nights.

BOVIM Ballet's new show, Tango Nights, is a fusion of fashion and dance; it rounds off its national tour in Johannesburg this month.

Tango Nights is on at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino from 17 to 21 June. Beginning in February, the tour has already been to Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein.

The show includes collaborations of fashion and music with international and local designers such as Malcolm Klûk and CGDT, who designed the costumes. The music includes the song, Roxanne, from the movie, Moulin Rouge.

"We have consciously pushed the boundaries of ballet. Classical ballet certainly has a place, but we have fused ballet with contemporary dance, and added jazz and gymnastics to it," says Sean Bovim, the founder of Bovim Ballet and the choreographer.

Tango Nights is set in Café Tango, where the passionate café hostess, Roxanna, seduces the headwaiter, Carlos. The two fall in love. This steamy love story is told through sensational dance sequences - it is a fusion of athletic rock ballet and passionate tango.

Principal dancers are Kerryn Howard, Andre Sauer, Tanya Futter and Marc Golderg.

Over the past 15 years, Bovim's work has been staged in South Africa, the United States, Russia, Denmark, Spain, Scotland - at the Edinburgh Festival - and Ireland, where Queen at the Ballet played to more than 30 000 people at the Point Theatre, in Dublin.

Bovim won the Dance Indaba Fringe Award for choreography in 1995, the National Choreographic Competition in 1999 and his production SwingTime won a Naledi Award in 2005.

"I used classical ballet because of its physicality, musicality and creativity to show off extraordinary technique combined with a fusion of styles that has become my own vocabulary," he says.

Ballet is not only about the great classics, he explains, but also deserves to be given the space to evolve just like architecture, art and culture that surround it.

Tango Nights has no age restriction; the show is one hour and 40 minutes long with a 20-minute interval.

Tickets are available through Computicket, on 083 915 8000 or 011 340 8000, or through the Computicket website and at the Lyric box office on 011 248 5000.
