Joburg Water will be moving water meters in Orange Grove

Millions of rand is being spent on replacing old water meters in Orange Grove, which will lead to fewer leaks and so lower costs.

JOBURG WATER is replacing old water meters in the eastern suburb of Orange Grove to cut future costs and continuous maintenance of water-related hiccups.

Old water meters are being replaced in the houses of the suburb, one of the city's older areas, to stop problems and leaks.

"These meters will be moved from inside properties to [pavements] so that people checking up on them can have easy access. Sometimes you find that there is no-one in the house and it makes it difficult to work on the meters," said the utility's marketing and communication manager, Baldwin Matsimela.

Costing R2,5-million, the project began in May and is expected to be completed in July. It is part of the recently launched Infrastructure Renewal Programme.

According to Matsimela, the work entails the installation of approximately 1 416 new meters on the associated pipe work in the Orange Grove area. "Orange Grove is the only place that we are currently working on. The recyclable meters and the pipes removed will be recycled."

Joburg Water was aware of the hiccups caused by old and outdated municipal water infrastructure and it had put in inclusive programmes to upgrade and restore municipal water and sanitation infrastructure throughout Johannesburg.

He said the new meters were made using new technology. The company has promised there will be no disruption to the water supply during the replacements; only meters on individual stands will be shut off during the specific installation.

Residents will be notified at least 48 hours in advance should any planned interruptions occur as a result of the work. They are urged to contact Joburg Water's 24-hour call centre on 011 688 1500 to report any water- and sewer-related problems.

In addition to the Orange Grove upgrades, a further R1,5-million is being invested by the utility for the replacement of water meters and chamber covers for its top 100 customers, which include industries, businesses and schools.
