The busy N3 South will be partially closed around the Linksfield Road
interchange this weekend for construction.
THE N3 South will be down to one lane at the Linksfield Road
interchange, in eastern Joburg, this weekend while the road is closed for
construction.
Only a single lane will be open for southbound traffic from
Saturday evening until midday on Sunday, to allow for construction of a new
bridge over the busy highway.
A crane would be used to put in place seven pre-cast beams,
said Hennie Kotze, a project engineer at the South African National Roads
Agency Limited (Sanral).
"Motorists should also be aware that, for safety reasons,
all traffic will be stopped as each beam is lifted by the crane," Kotze said in
a press statement.
"Motorists using the N3 freeway travelling south as well as
motorists travelling on Linksfield
Road across the interchange should therefore
expect delays of at least 15 minutes each time a beam is lifted."
Stops should also be expected on the N3 southbound
carriageway on Sunday morning, and on the Linksfield onramp to the route. Traffic
delays are expected as the stops are anticipated to last for at least 20
minutes.
Sanral urged motorists to find alternative routes on to the
N3 rather than Linksfield Road;
they should instead use the R24 and the Modderfontein Interchange.
"The [bridge] construction is part of a drive to improve Gauteng's roads," said
Sanral's spokesperson, Priya Pillay.
The work was being done over the weekend to avoid major
traffic congestion, the agency said.
