Get on over to Zoo Lake for the annual Jazz on the Lake

All things good are going on this weekend. It's spring; it's warm; trees are green and blooming; and it's Jazz on the Lake.

MUSIC lovers keen to enjoy the beginning of spring should head for the Zoo Lake this weekend for the annual Jazz on the Lake.

Seven hours of non-stop world-class music awaits music fans on Sunday, 6 September from 10am to 5pm. Heading the international artist line-up is Senegal's Omar Pene, who is backed by Super Diamono.

Susheela Raman is also performing; she is in the country to take part in Shared History: The Indian Experience in South Africa, an arm of the Joburg Arts Alive International festival.

Raman was nominated for Britain's Mercury Music prize in 2001 for her album Salt Rain and is one of the most popular Indian artists working today. She specialises in South Indian classical music, with contemporary sounds. She will perform with her guitarist, Sam Mills, and two Rajasthani musicians, Nathoo Lal Solanki and Chugge Khan.

Brazilian 17-piece SpokFevro Orquestra rounds off the international element of Jazz on the Lake. And the band is expected to get the audience tapping their feet.

The home-grown line-up includes the former Sankomota lead and gospel soloist, Tsepo Tshola, "The Village Pope". Tshola brings decades of experience as a performing and recording artist.

Selaelo Selota, who released a new studio album in March called Lapeng Laka, will also be performing. Zuluboy is set to inject super-charged youth energy into the day. The former Durban resident has become Joburg's most popular hip-hop artist and his albums Masihambisane and iNqolobane prove that ethnocentric and hip-hop make a compelling fusion.

Another exciting addition is the Standard Bank Young Artists Jazz Trio. Comprising Concord Nkabinde, Kesivan Naidoo and Mark Fransman, these winners of the award for jazz provide a scintillating example of why South Africa is considered by many to be the home of modern jazz.

Rounding off the line up are Xolisa Dlamini and Tebogo Moloto.

Roads will be closed around Zoo Lake, in Parkview, Parkwood, Saxonwold and Forest Town, with an outer and inner cordon in place. Residents living within the barricaded area will receive two permits per household. They can be collected from the Zoo Lake Sport's Club until Saturday, 5 September from 7am to 8pm. Residents needs to bring their identity documents and electricity accounts to collecting passes.

There will also be park and ride facilities from Marks Park in Emmarentia and the University of the Witwatersrand in Braamfontein. Jazz on the Lake is free and safe. No alcohol, drugs, weapons or glass are allowed at the venue.
