Peter Rabbit, the famous 1902 novel by Beatrix Potter, is being staged until 11 October at the People's Theatre, in the Joburg Theatre Complex

Get the kids to the People's Theatre for a magical retelling of Peter Rabbit and Other Tales that will have them keen to read more.

ONCE upon a time there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-Tail and Peter. They lived with their mother, who always told them, "You may go into the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr McGregor's garden."

Along with Peter Rabbit and his siblings, this 30-minute play features other famous Potter characters - meet Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Johnny Town-Mouse.

The play begins with an actor reading the first few lines of the book; thereafter, the action begins as the story flows from page to page and to the stage. Live characters embody the various animals in the tales.

Without being consciously aware of it, children in the audience will experience reading as a stimulating and entertaining activity, according to the production's directors, Jill Girard and Keith Smith.

They have included live music, dance and theatrical magic to further entertain and enchant.

Girard and Smith say they have a long-standing partnership, with one of their trademarks being audience partnership. The children will be encouraged to interact with the characters, encapsulating the live theatre experience, getting them actively involved in the storyline and enhancing their enjoyment of the show.

Peter Rabbit and Other Tales is suitable for children from pre-school to Grade 6. Tickets cost from R89 and are available at Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000 or 011 340 8000, or online. All children aged over one must pay full price, although there are special prices for block bookings.

For further information, visit the Joburg Theatre Complex website. The theatre complex is in Loveday Street, Braamfontein.
