The month-long Arts Alive festival that has kept Joburg on its entertainment toes is ending this weekend, with concerts, jazz and story telling.
A SERIES of exciting musical shows and activities has been lined up this weekend to mark the end of Arts Alive.
Hosted by the City of Johannesburg, the month-long festival features local and international artists and is one of the most popular arts, theatre, dance and music festivals in the country.
Senegal's supergroup, Xalam 2 make its first appearance at Arts Alive
To end the event on a high note, Dorothy Masuku and friends perform at the Mandela Theatre, at the Joburg Theatre Complex in Braamfontein, over the weekend of 26 and 27 September. The show starts at 8pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. Tickets are R100 each.
Masuku will share the stage with other legends - Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Busi Mhlongo, Siphokazi and Abigail Kubeka all perform.
Story telling
And also at the theatre complex, the magical Gcina Mhlope is telling stories at Space.com on Saturday, 26 September. Entrance is free.
A story-teller extraordinaire, Mhlope brings her fervour and passion to Arts Alive as part of a drive to encourage children to read. She has written and published numerous poems, plays and children's stories.
Across the bridge, at the Bassline in Newtown, a group of musicians from east, west and southern Africa promise to get audiences swaying to a diverse selection of African music. Senegal's supergroup, Xalam, are back as Xalam 2, making its first appearance at Arts Alive.
Also on the bill are Thuba Letu, the three African tenors, and Niger's Etran Finatawa, Elemonto from Namibia and Victor Kunonga from Zimbabwe. The show starts at 7pm on Saturday, 26 September, and tickets are R75 each.

Still at the Bassline, the following day up-coming artists perform alongside established musicians. This show gives them the chance to show what they have to offer. Gang of Instrumentals, one of South African leading bands, performs along with Baponga from Gabon.
Sioen from Belgium shares the stage with local musicians Pops Mohamed and Kaya Mahlangu, as well as Zimbabwean rising star, Fatso. Sioen is a major contemporary classic rock musician who is known in his native country for his distinctive super-charged voice and brilliant arrangements.
He has released three albums and his hit singles are household names in Belgium. The Bassline show starts at 4pm and tickets are R75.
Eldos Jazz Festival
The annual Eldos Jazz Festival takes place on Sunday, 27 September from 11am to 6pm at Krematart Park in Eldorado Park Extension 3.
This festival provides a platform for aspiring artists to share the stage with experienced and established musicians. Julius Schultz, Mr Keyz, Bryce Anderson and Anonymous, and Selaelo Selota are on the bill. The spotlight, however, will be on the international reggae star, Etana, from Jamaica.
