Many strong, talented women have called Johannesburg home, and
Jozi Ma Sweetie looks at how the city rubbed off on them.
SHE'S a gold digger, a freedom fighter, an
entrepreneur, a fashionista and just when you think you know her, she shows you
another side that catches you off guard - she is Jozi.
Remembering the people that have lived in the city of gold
This is how the city of gold, Johannesburg, is described in Jozi Ma Sweetie, a play at
the University of
Johannesburg Arts Centre,
running until 3 October.
Jozi Ma Sweetie is an original musical,
commissioned and produced by the University
of Johannesburg, and is a
tribute to the wiles and ways of the city.
"The show is a tribute to Joburg and the people
that have lived in it," says the university's Ehllené Bekker. It portrays how
the city's bustling and hustling has rubbed off on the women who have called it
home.
They include Ruth First, Miriam Makeba, Nadine
Gordimer, Helen Suzman, Dolly Rathebe, Lebo Mathosa and Marianne Fassler, says Bekker.
In it, Joburg is depicted through the eyes
of Jozi, played by Tshepo Vilakati; Johannes, played by Angus Meier; Ma Africa,
played by Puleng Mohapi and Mzansi, played by Thubelihle Ngcobo.
Emma Bekker wrote the script and Alby
Michaels directed. Choreography was by Owen Lonzar and Marga Sander was in
charge of the vocal direction. Musician and composer Rocco de Villiers composed
and produced the music.
The show is on Wednesdays and Saturdays
only, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost R65 for adults, R45 for groups of 10 or more, R35
for pensioners and R25 for students. They are available at Computicket outlets,
on 011 340 8000 or online,
and at the theatre box office one hour before each show.
The University
of Johannesburg
Arts Centre is on the UJ Kingsway Campus, in Auckland Park.
