The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra in action

Singer Harry Talas and Phat Brass are performing with young musicians at the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra's annual Metamorphosis Concert.

THE annual Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Metamorphosis Concert is taking place at Thaba Ya Batswana African Renaissance Eco Lodge on Sunday, 18 October.

As always, the concert is a medley of classical, jazz and contemporary music featuring the young musicians playing alongside established stars. This year, Harry Talas sings with Phat Brass, a big band that has been playing since 1983. It is led by John Davies, and has performed at Metamorphosis concerts in the past.

The band's repertoire will include special arrangements of jazz, modern movie music and classical, a style that has distinguished it over the years. Together Talas and Phat Brass have produced a CD, called Stolen Moments.

The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company provides a home for more than a thousand young musicians from across Gauteng, some of whom perform in its youth orchestras. It focuses on teaching music to the youth, and trains beginners on all orchestral instruments.

It has six main youth orchestras: the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Band, the Jazz Youth Orchestra, the Foundation Orchestra, Chamber Winds and Chamber Strings.

Before Sunday's show, the Flower and Landscaping Show is being held at noon, followed by the concert at 3pm, at which wine and snacks will be served. There is also time to stroll through the gardens, which are filled with indigenous trees, plants, birds and wildlife.

Thaba Ya Batswana is in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in southern Joburg. The name means Mountain of the Tswana, and remnants of Tswana settlements dating back 600 years have been found in the area.

The Metamorphosis Concert is at 3pm, and tickets are available for R250 per person through the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company, on 011 484 1257. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards subsidised music training for needy children.

Thaba Ya Batswana is at 46 Impala Road, in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. For more information, phone the lodge on 011 959 0777.
