Fourty soccer teams will take part in the KwaMahlobo Festive Games this year

The registration deadline looms for the annual games, which have produced some famous players, with the draw scheduled for Christmas Eve.

SOCCER lovers will be treated to some enjoyable football this festive season, when 40 soccer teams battle it out for the R20 000 grand prize at the 12th annual KwaMahlobo Festive Games.

Registration for the games closes on 23 December, and the draw will be on 24 December at 2.00pm at Christina Place in Dobsonville, where 40 first division teams will be selected.

The games begin on 26 December, the Day of Goodwill, and continue until 10 January.

Playing in the tournament has enormous advantages for young soccer players. It has produced a number of professionals over the years, including Arthur Zwane and Scara Ngobese of Kaizer Chiefs, Benedict Vilakazi of Orlando Pirates and Goodman Mazibuko of Moroka Swallows.

Registration is R1 000 per team. The winners will take home a cheque of R20 000, a trophy, 22 gold medals and a soccer kit. The runners up will take home R8 000, a trophy, 22 silver medals and a soccer kit. Third and fourth placed teams will each pocket R1 500, 22 bronze medals and a soccer kit. The top goal scorer and the player of the tournament will each pocket R500 and a trophy, respectively.

This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Kwamahlobo Festive Games, traditionally played at the Kwamahlobo Grounds in Zone 10, Meadowlands.

“The field is still as dusty and dry as it has been with previous games,” said Patrick Ntenjwa, the public relations officer for the tournament, when asked about the condition of the grounds.

According to Ntenjwa, for the third time in the history of the games, it has sponsors. “Altech Auto Page, Royal Bafokeng, G-West Funeral Parlour, and Nike SA will be sponsoring this year’s games,” he said.  Prior to 2007’s games, there were also companies willing to sponsor the games.
