Male and female dancers are sought for the ballet The Sleeping Beauty, with auditions taking the form of a ballet class.

DANCERS are invited to audition for The Sleeping Beauty, a ballet by the Roodepoort Youth Ballet and Mzansi Productions.

Auditions are open to boys and girls from the age of five. Taking the form of a ballet class, they are on Saturday, 6 February at the Ballet Studios in the Arts Centre at the University of Johannesburg. Registration is from 9am to 9.45am.

Leon Bezuidenhout of Mzansi Productions says the ballet "will give young dancers in the Gauteng area an opportunity to perform with a professional company".

The Sleeping Beauty, the well-known fairytale with the beautiful princess and handsome prince, will be performed under the direction of Dirk Badenhorst. Choreography and artistic direction is by Joel Morris.

Lead roles will be danced by members of the National Ballet School of Cuba and Mzansi Productions Experiential Programme, as well as young dancers who are ready for leading roles and who have auditioned successfully. All other roles will be filled through the auditions.

The experiential programme is a valuable training forum for potential professional dancers. Bezuidenhout says the Cuban dancers were chosen because "we have a three-year schools exchange programme with them". It is also the biggest ballet school in the world.

An audition fee of R25 will be charged; if the dancer is accepted, a fee of R500 must be paid for registration and costume. Appropriate ballet gear must be worn for the audition. Girls should wear leotards and boys should wear tights, T-shirts and dance shoes. Girls who are en pointes should bring their pointe shoes.

Rehearsals will be preceded by master classes taught by one of the company members for a fee of R30 per class. Rehearsals for The Sleeping Beauty will take place on Saturdays at the Ballet Studios in the Arts Centre; the production will take place from 25 to 27 May at the Arts Centre's theatre.
