Catch Cinema Wow at the Joburg Theatre Complex

With Valentine's Day falling on a Sunday this year, you have the whole day to spend with your loved one. And there are loads of things to do together.

LOVE is in the air again, with Valentine's Day on Sunday, 14 February turning up the heat across the city. And a number of venues are rising to the occasion, with activities that promise to make the day extra special.

At the Joburg Theatre Complex in Braamfontein, Cinema Wow features music from the 1930s to now. The trio of singers perform hits such as Life Could Be A Dream, Lemon Tree, ABC, Mas Que Nada and Chasing Cars.

"It is the Andrews Sisters meets Beyonce meets cabaret, set against a backdrop of classical film," says the theatre's associate producer and marketing manager, Claire Pacariz. "The tunes are well known and will keep audiences tapping their toes throughout the 80-minutes of non-stop fun."

On at the complex's Fringe Theatre, the show starts at 2pm and tickets are R90 each at Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000 or 011 340 8000, or through the Computicket website. For more information, call the Joburg Theatre Complex on 011 877 6800 or visit the website.

Muse
There is more theatre down in Newtown, at the Market Theatre. The Pen tells the story of a young playwright, Sipho, who is trying to write a new play.

Beset by writers' block, he is lured on a seductive journey with Thandi. The boundaries between fantasy and reality become blurred as he begins to live in an increasingly illusionary world dominated by his sexy, assertive writing goddess.

His girlfriend, Pinky, innocently drawn into his passionate internal world, soon starts to suffer as she realises Sipho's passion for Thandi. Her attempts to woo Sipho are frustrated as Thandi seems to be the perfect woman.

"This is a great show. People must come with their better halves to watch this exciting and moving show," says the theatre's publicist, Robert Motseko.

The Pen is on at The Market Theatre until 21 February. Tickets are available at Computicket, from R50 to R120 each. Show times are 8.15pm during the week and 3.15pm on Sundays.

Also at The Market, at the Laager Theatre, is Foreplay. This show is a South African adaptation of Arthur Schnizler's Reigen, also known as La Ronde, brought from 1890s Vienna into the vivid and distinctive world of Paul Grootboom's South Africa in 2008. It follows a series of 10 interconnected love scenes.

No children under the age of 16 are allowed. Foreplay is on at the Market's Laager Theatre until 14 March. Show times are 8.15pm during the week and 3.15pm on Sundays. Tickets are from R50 to R120 each at Computicket.

Musical
And then there is Songs of Migration, a musical tribute to the great songs of migrants across Africa. Created by the internationally acclaimed trumpeter, composer and lyricist Hugh Masekela, it was written and directed by award-winning director James Ngcobo and features the multi-talented Sibongile Khumalo.

The story follows the discovery of minerals in Gauteng and other parts of South Africa during the late 19th century. People migrated to the tent towns and later the cities. These new migrants brought with them their music, traditional costumes, musical instruments, songs, ceremonies and dances.

Songs of Migration is on at the Market Theatre until 21 February. Tickets are available at Computicket and cost from R50 to R140 each. Shows are at 8.15pm during the week and 3.15pm on Sundays.

Afterwards, grab a bite at one of the many restaurants at the park - there is Chip 'n Dip, Anat, Ola Milky Lane, Barney's Restaurant and Bar, Mugg & Bean, Barcello's, and Wimpy.
