The South African Post Office will launch
its eighth definitive series at the Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show, to
philatelists from around the world.
FROM a selection of the Queen Elizabeth II
collection to the launch of a new series of stamps by the South African Post
Office, the Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show is sure to attract scores of philatelists.
The Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show is one of the city's largest events this year
Taking place at the Sandton Convention
Centre in the north of the city from 27 to 31 October, the Joburg 2010
International Stamp Show is billed one of the biggest attractions of the year.
The stamp show, which falls under the
auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP), is sponsored by the
Philatelic Foundation of South Africa and the South African Post Office. It is
also recognised by the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP), the
international governing body for world philately.
It is the first international stamp
exhibition to be hosted by South Africa since the successful Ilsapex International
in 1998, which was also held in Joburg, and it is to honour philately, or the
collection and study of postage stamps and related material, according to the
show's co-chairperson, Howard Green.
"With a history spanning many, many years,
philately is a complex and diverse pursuit, and its significance will be
highlighted and acknowledged with this coming event."
Seasoned stamp collectors and those only
recently hooked on the hobby will be able to interact with scores of local and
international philatelists and, maybe, add some rare stamps to their
collections. According to the organisers, hundreds of members of the
international philatelic community from 45 countries will fill up about
5 800m² of exhibition space.
"The pride and fellowship of philately will
be celebrated. Expertise, experience and passion from all corners of the Earth
will set the benchmark for the Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show," Green
says.
Collectors
Participants are expected from Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia,
Tanzania, Zambia and Sudan, Australia, China, France, Germany, Malaysia,
Pakistan and the USA, among other countries.
The event takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre
About 1 500 frames of competitive
exhibits with over 20 000 pages of stamps and philatelic material will be
on display. A philatelist's paradise, the competitive exhibition is expected to
be a major attraction.
Highlights of the stamp show will include a
unique Court of Honour, featuring a selection of the Queen Elizabeth II
collection. The queen has given personal approval for the collection to be
displayed, according to Green.
Another interesting feature of the show will
be the launch of the eighth definitive stamp series by the South African Post
Office. Issued every five to seven years, the definitive stamp series usually
reflects a particular theme. For example, the seventh definitive series was
based on a colourful South Africa, and depicted fish, flowers, birds and
butterflies.
There will also be a youth activation zone,
expected to attract a large number of young stamp collectors. To take part in
the stamp show, philatelists can enter the competitive exhibition by filling
out a form online
by no later than 31 March.
