THE Department of Revenue and Customer Relations Management (R&CRM) is one of the pivots of the City of Johannesburg. It is responsible for relations between the City and its various customers, and is also responsible for collecting the revenues vital to the smooth functioning of Johannesburg as a world-class African city.

Revenue collection
Every month the City sends out accounts to all of its residents, charging for electricity and water supplies, for waste collection, and for property taxes, more commonly known as rates.

This revenue is used for a wide range of municipal services, from basic services like the maintenance of roads, refuse collection and water provision, to social upliftment initiatives and education programmes.

Public face
The R&CRM department is also the public face of the City. It is via the staff of this department that most Joburg residents get to know more about their city.

The department keeps residents up-to-date with customer information through a range of different media: advertisements, billboards, information on the City’s website, newsletters and via the accounts that get sent out.

City consumer campaigns, such as encouraging consumers to pay their accounts before going on holiday, are co-ordinated through the R&CRM department.

It also runs education campaigns to encourage a culture of paying accounts by showing just how revenues are used and how important each contribution is to creating a world-class African city.
