Partnerships
Corporate Geo-Informatics (CGIS) has become the core of the City's
database, providing data for all its departments. As such, CGIS has
various partnerships with relevant concerns within and outside the City
of Johannesburg.
It works closely with the City's utilities, sharing information
with the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Johannesburg Water, City Power,
City Parks and Pikitup. It also acts as data host to the Johannesburg
Property Company (JPC) and the Economic Development Department.
Collated information assists in analysis and planning, and provides
visuals of how areas have changed geographically.
What is GIS?
GIS stands for geographic information
system. When used by local governments, GIS is a computer technology
that combines geographic data - which includes both natural and
man-made features of a specific surface area - and other information
such as street names, zones, property values and demographics to
generate visual maps and reports.
Corporate GIS supplies an interactive mapping service to the
public, available on e-services. Click on the online maps (GIS) option
listed on the left of the page.
Corporate GIS offers free training on the use of the online maps.
Newsletters
The department has its own quarterly
newsletter to keep stakeholders updated on the latest developments -
access the newsletters through e-services, under Corporate GIS. The
newsletter, called Corporate GIS News, is distributed free of charge,

An overview
Corporate Geo-Informatics realises the strategic value of geographic
information and is committed to managing it as a corporate resource.
The unit uses its geographic information systems (GIS) and associated
resources to improve the quality of its products, to streamline its
processes and to improve services.
The unit provides geographic feature maps and detailed
information, including density, height zone, parking requirements,
building lines, full area report and zoning certificates, on all
Johannesburg properties. See the website for more information.
Vision
Its main vision is to ensure the timely provision of accurate and
relevant geographically referenced spatial and related information for
the City of Johannesburg and all its residents.
At least 70 percent to 80 percent of the average local
government's work involves land or geographically related issues. This
explains why geographic information and the associated management
systems are an integral part of planning and implementing the City's
vision.
Mission
There are a number of prongs to its mission, namely:
- To provide corporate base information pertaining to the administrative, socio-economic, cultural and natural environments;
- To create a secure data environment;
- To provide added value products such as maps and reports;
- To maintain a data warehouse; and
- To supply an information counter service.
Values
It is committed to six values, namely
customer focus, accessible information, quality, efficiency,
innovation, and professional, skilled staff. To entrench these values,
they are used as the basis for the directorate's annual awards at the
end of the year.
