Services

Because of the recent nature of most of the developments in the northern parts of the city and rapid urban expansion, many areas in the region are poorly serviced and there is a need for increasing service provision.

The most pressing needs include providing educational facilities, increasing employment opportunities and creating local neighbourhood retail nodes. Also needed are public transport, water and sewage services.

A lack of schools in areas such as Diepsloot, Zevenfontein, Kaalfontein, Rabie Ridge and Ivory Park has put pressure and caused overcrowding on existing facilities in the area.

Public health facilities in the region include a mobile clinic that visits the Lanseria area and primary healthcare facilities in Diepsloot. The township also has a primary school and a sports precinct. A Multi-Purpose Community Centre in Ivory Park provides facilities for healthcare, developmental welfare, education and training and sports and recreation.

Clustering of social services at a single point of access is increasingly seen as the answer to solving capacity problems and providing communities with a full range of amenities, including social facilities.

However, the effects of HIV/Aids in the region has meant that health facilities have come under increasing pressure, leading to a need for an increased level of service provision and additional services such as counselling and support centres.

Several high quality schools and private medical facilities serve the more affluent areas. The Lonehill Fire Station services the region; there is no police station, although the possibility of a satellite station at Diepsloot is being investigated.
