Attractions

A major advantage is the region's proximity to the Cradle of Humankind, a world heritage site that includes the Sterkfontein Cave, and high-quality accommodation in the surrounding areas.

Also in the region is the internationally known Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, the premier home of racing in Gauteng and formerly host of several editions of the South African Grand Prix.

Richard Loring's Sound Stage and the Theatre on the Track provide high quality live entertainment, and leisure time is also well served by several shopping centres and cinemas.

The Fourways Nature Reserve and the Lion Park are big attractions, while the Witkoppen Farm House is a national monument. There is also a nature reserve in Diepsloot, though public access is limited and it has yet to reach its full potential.

Bird lovers can visit the Glen Austin Bird Sanctuary and Lory Park Zoo, the latter housing the biggest display of exotic birds in South Africa and an owl sanctuary.

Country clubs in Dainfern and Fourways provide excellent sporting facilities, attracting golfers in particular, while horse riding has a high appeal in the rural fringes of the region. The area around Kyalami is especially famous for its dressage displays of the Lipizzaner horses.

Gallagher Estate and Vodaworld are two commercial centres that are well worth a visit and among the several venues that host exhibitions throughout the year.

At the other end of the spectrum, visitors in search of good shopping can make their way to Fourways, where plenty of entertainment opportunities are to be found in and around the gigantic shopping centre.

The poorer areas to the east of Midrand have fewer leisure amenities, but Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge have sports stadiums, while the latter also has a swimming pool
