Inner city

Johannesburg Art Gallery
The collection of the city's major public gallery spans international artists such as Rodin, Picasso and Henry Moore, to South Africans such as Sekoto, Batisse and Pierneef. It also houses an extensive collection of the work of contemporary local artists. Guided tours are conducted on request but booking is required.

Bensusan Museum of Photography
Part of Museum Africa, this space focuses on the history of photography and exhibits a permanent collection of optical toys, mirrors and lenses, showing the principles of photography and cinematography. It has a temporary exhibition space showing historical and contemporary work by local and international artists.

Spaza Gallery
Uniquely situated in a multi-cultured neighbourhood in the inner city is the Spaza Gallery. This gallery offers paintings, sketches, drawings, stone work from Lesotho, recycled works, decorated iron furniture, mosaic pieces, jewellery and lots more. As a non-profit organisation Spaza Art gallery has a vision of providing a showcase for artists of all types from all over South Africa. Spaza Gallery is a community gallery that runs mosaic workshops, has Sunday lunches, music sessions and shows.

The Absa Gallery
This gallery, at Absa's head office in the city centre, houses up to 20 000 works - believed to be the largest corporate art collection in the world. Group and solo exhibitions of up-and-coming artists are held throughout the year.

Afronova
Afronova is a Pan African gallery showcasing modern and contemporary art. Based in the bustling Newtown precinct this elegant gallery space also boasts a specialized bookshop with a catalogue of local and international publications on the art of Africa.

Lilian Road Studios
This working studio gallery invites people to watch artists at work. Lilian Road studios was established for career artists including painters, photographers filmmakers and writers.

Museum Africa
This museum has some 850 000 items in its storerooms, and focuses on South African cultural history. It houses the Bensusan Museum of Photography and the Museum of South African Rock Art, as well as a geological collection. Temporary exhibition spaces host multidisciplinary festivals, contemporary art and student shows.

Gallery Seippel
Gallery Seippel shows both South African art as well as international contemporary art and is the local branch of Seippel Art Culturem based in Cologne. The gallery specialises in creating and developing multifarious art and culture projects.

Unity Gallery

Artists' Proof Studio
This community-based printmaking studio serves as a training, production and selling facility concentrating on skills transfer and exchange programmes in southern Africa and abroad.

Market Photography Workshop
The workshop is a photographic training centre providing students with skills. The centre has studios and darkroom facilities, and also shows works by current and former students.

Standard Bank Gallery
Since it's opening in 1990, this gallery has become home to one of South Africa's biggest corporate and African art collections. The gallery also hosts exhibitions of local and European contemporary artists.

Bag Factory
This was originally a bag factory that was converted into artists' studios with a gallery space for exhibitions. The Bag Factory is a non-profit organisation that promotes the visual arts by offering affordable studios for both upcoming and established artists. The Bag Factory also runs a residency programme that promotes cultural exchange and debate nationally and internationally.

Gallery Oriental
This gallery is unique in Johannesburg because it specialises in Islamic art from South Africa and other countries. Gallery Oriental also boasts a big selection of African art. There are two branches, one in Fordsburg, and another in Saxonwold.
