ImageEnvironmental issues

The utility has suggestions of how each person can do their bit to care for the environment.

Recycling

Separating recyclable materials - glass, paper, metals and certain plastics - out of the waste stream reduces the bulk of waste going to landfills, eases the strain on our natural resources and helps to create employment in the informal and formalised waste reclamation sectors.

Pikitup's support has been vital in establishing five community-run recycling buy-back centres located across the city, and more centres are planned for the future.

The utility is actively involved in recycling research and is investigating recycling joint ventures with international partners.

It supports recycling and processing green garden waste into soil-enhancing compost, and has established a composting plant at the Panorama Garden Site, with green waste handling facilities at Ballyclare and Victory Park garden refuse sites.

Read more on what can or cannot be recycled.
