Vision

The Joburg Zoo’s goal is to be recognised as Gauteng’s environmental and wildlife destination of choice through conservation, recreation, education and research.

Mission

It aims to be a world-class African zoo driven by competent, motivated and customer-focused people.

Objectives

After researching international experiences and trends, the zoo has drawn up a long-term plan to meet its vision and mission, focusing on what characterises “an ideal zoo” that supports the conservation of wild populations and habitats.

Through its five-year plan, the zoo aims to become a place that is loved and visited regularly by Joburg’s people and that contributes in a significant way to conservation.

It includes:

  • A commitment to conservation in the wild as the primary goal and focus for any zoological institution;
  • Focusing on reviewing and improving the welfare of the animals within the zoo;
  • Using the unique opportunities presented by the facility for animal research, both in the wild and in the zoo;
  • Developing education programmes focusing on encouraging people to take action on environmental issues; and
  • Establishing innovative exhibits to excite and inspire the visiting public.
