Edutainment

The Johannesburg Zoo is constantly thinking up entertaining ways to teach people about environmental issues and about the animals and conservation. Its programmes support the education department’s Outcomes-Based Education programmes.

It offers tours, school programmes, holiday programmes and youth clubs through its education centre.

Education centre

The education centre runs a wide variety of educational programmes targeting different audiences, aimed at setting up the Johannesburg Zoo as an educational facility of choice for all Gauteng learners.

Some of its different programmes and activities include a holiday programme, a zoo-to-you programme, a Honey Badger Club, night safaris and behind-the-scenes tours.

They are tailored to cover any topic requested, for example, on ecology or animal adaptations. There is an entrance fee and booking is essential.

Environmental campaigns

A number of international awareness days take place throughout the year, celebrated at the zoo. These include World Wetlands Day, World Environment Day and other related events.

On these days, awareness is boosted around specific topics, targeting schools and the broader public.
