Departmental structure
The department has three core sections:
  • Intergovernmental relations: which provides back-up to City officials in their dealings with other spheres of government.
  • International relations: which supports the City in its dealing with other countries
  • Protocol: which ensures that the correct procedures in dealing with all external relations are maintained.

An Overview

The City's External Relations Unit consists of three sections: intergovernmental relations; international relations; and protocol.

The intergovernmental and international relations sections are responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships within the spheres of municipal interaction. The protocol section is responsible for ensuring that the correct procedures are followed during international interaction.

Based in the Office of the Executive Mayor and reporting directly to the City manager, the unit is the champion of the top structure of the City – the executive mayor, City manager, the chief whip, the Office of the Speaker and the members of the mayoral committee.
