It is a case of any flight you fancy with Joburg’s international airport accommodating daily flights from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas.

Gateway to Jozi: OR Tambo International Airport

 

THE world really is a global village and getting to the biggest city at the bottom of Africa is very easy.

OR Tambo International Airport, on the outskirts of Joburg, accommodates a large number of daily flights from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas.

The national carrier, South African Airways (SAA), flies to destinations worldwide.

Flight information

From Africa
A wide range of airlines fly in and out of South Africa on a regular basis, including: Air Botswana, Air Gabon, Air Kenya, Air Madagascar, Air Malawi, Air Seychelles, Air Tanzania, Air Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Express, British Airways, Egypt Air, Ghana Airways, SAA and Virgin Airways.

From Asia
China is serviced by both Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, with hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore. Arrivals at OR Tambo International Airport are usually early morning, with a flight from Singapore taking just 10 hours.

SAA flies directly from Mumbai to Johannesburg four times a week, with flights arriving at about 8am. Flights from Chattrapathi Shivaji International Airport to OR Tambo International Airport take roughly nine hours.

Flights from Japan and Korea to Joburg are routed via Hong Kong.

From Australia
There is an agreement between SAA and Qantas to service flights from Perth and Sydney to Johannesburg. SAA flies from Perth to Johannesburg from Wednesday to Sunday and from Sydney every day except for Tuesdays and Saturdays. Flying time from Sydney to Johannesburg is 16 hours and Perth to Johannesburg just under 14 hours.

From Europe
There are daily flights between most European cities, with a large number of flights scheduled for over-night, so you’ll arrive here rested and ready to take on the city. Generally, it takes one between eight and 10 hours to get here.

Major airlines include: Air Austral, Air France, Air Portugal, British Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Olympic Airways, SAA, Swissair and Virgin Airways.

From the Americas
SAA operates daily from Washington and New York. These flights take around 17 hours.

There are flights from Sao Paolo to Johannesburg every day, arriving at OR Tambo Internationa Airport at about 7am. The flights from Guaralhos International Airport in Sao Paulo take about 8 1/2 hours.
