Cable theft continues to be the scourge that affects the lives of City Power customers. Such is the case this morning when City Power cables were stolen at Jukskei River along Malibongwe Drive at around 02h10. Both cables supplying the areas below have been stolen thus it is not possible to back-feed the affected areas below:

Northwold

Bromhof
Part of Northriding
Strijdom Park and the surrounding areas

City Power technicians are currently busy working on restoration. The expected restoration time for this outage is 15h30 today.

There are a number of interventions that City Power makes to fight cable theft however it still needs the community to get involved by alerting City Power of any cable theft incident or suspicious activity on our network by calling our Risk and Security Control Room 24 hours at 011 490 7900 or 011 490 7911 or 011 490 7504 or 011 490 7553.
We have a response vehicle which patrols high risk areas based on theft and vandalism statistics.

We also conduct joint Operations with SAPS on Scrap metal dealers from time to time because that is where cable thieves sell stolen cables.

City Power is installing pole to ground sleeves and aerial conductor cables (ABC) across the city of Johannesburg to prevent cables being cut by cable thieves. Another reason is that ABC cable is made of aluminium and it is of no value to cable thieves.
We have a partnership with SAPS and JMPD to combat cable theft. In that regard, we patrol high risk areas based on cable theft and vandalism statistics at our disposal.
An on-going community education and awareness campaign focuses on how the public can assist us in preventing cable theft.
