Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the City of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg is currently embarking on a process to conduct a comprehensive review of its current Climate Change Adaptation Plan which was launched in 2009 in order to integrate and to prioritize strategic investments and activities to reduce climate risks. If climate variability is to increase, it is necessary to understand how climate impacts on the different sectors and their resultant vulnerability. This will focus attention on where priority interventions might reduce the impacts of climate change and help the city to easily adapt, rather than react when the damage has already been done. Amongst other urgent local adaptation priorities, the review will focus on the enhancement of early warning systems across the city, cost –benefit analysis, heat-wave response plan etc. Climate Change Adaption Plan

Energy Demand Side Management Policy for the City of Johannesburg

Electricity supply and resource constraints in terms of water and land availability for landfill airspace and growing environmental concerns have placed pressure on the City of Johannesburg to consider options for reducing demand for electricity by the city's residents and businesses operating in the City. One such option through which the city can encourage residents and businesses to reduce their demand for electricity is through the implementation of the energy demand side management interventions and the incorporation of energy consumption and conservation in order to regulate the behaviour of citizens. Through the development of an Energy Demand Side Management Policy (EDSM), the city will create an enabling environment for an increase uptake of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Effective implementation of the EDSM Policy will help the City to:

a) Improve energy security and risk management;

b) Reduce demand for electricity;

c) Reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the burning of fossil fuel such

d) as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur dioxide (S02) and nitrous oxide (N02) emissions;

e) Improve the quality of life through the provision of energy efficiency technologies; and

f) Create jobs in the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries.
