Tourism internships open Print E-mail

Careers in tourism are opening up, with several internships available in various positions in the hospitality and catering industries.

PEOPLE looking to carve a career in the travel and hospitality industry can apply for a six-month internship programme, set up by the City’s department of economic development in partnership with various accommodation, travel and hospitality establishments.

In particular, women, youth and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply for the positions before Thursday, 24 May. The internship have been set up to facilitate work experience among the unemployed and increase their possibilities for long-term employability in the travel and hospitality sector.

There are minimum requirements for the positions. Applicants must have:

  • Matric certificate;
  • Good working knowledge of English (verbal and written);
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Proof of residence, for example, a municipal statement, a letter from a ward councillor or an affidavit;
  • Computer skills;
  • Declaration of criminal record;
  • Must be willing to work long, irregular and shift hours for some positions; and
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years.

Positions available are:

  • Receptionists x 25 (City Lodges, Meredale, Sandton, Vaal Marina, Maropeng, Vereeniging, Pretoria, Johannesburg). Training requirement: a tertiary qualification in hospitality management.
  • Museum and heritage sites security officers x 25 (Museum Africa, Johannesburg Art Gallery, James Hall Museum of Transport, Kliptown Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, Workers Museum, Oppenheimer Towers and Credo Muthwa Village). Training requirement: basic security skills, numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Museum, galleries and heritage sites education officers x 21 (Museum Africa, Johannesburg Art Gallery, James Hall Museum of Transport, Kliptown Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, Workers Museum, Oppenheimer Towers and Credo Muthwa Village, Wits). Training requirement: BA degree with history as major and computer skills.
  • Chefs x 19 (Meredale, Sandton, Midrand, Maropeng, Pretoria and Johannesburg). Training requirement: cooking qualification, knife handling skills, be able to work flexible shifts.
  • Waiters and waitresses x 18 (Sandton, Vaal Marina, Maropeng, Vereeniging, Pretoria, Johannesburg). Training requirement: communication skills, good people skills, well-presented and well-groomed.
  • Research interns x 18 (Various areas in Joburg). Training requirement: research methods, BTech or honours in economics, statistics, tourism, marketing and business management.
  • Museum and galleries curators x 11 (Museum Africa, Johannesburg Art Gallery, James Hall Museum of Transport, Kliptown Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, Workers Museum, Oppenheimer Towers and Credo Muthwa Village, Wits). Training requirement: BA degree with history as a major and computer skills.
  • Museum assistants x 11 (Museum Africa, Johannesburg Art Gallery, James Hall Museum of Transport, Kliptown Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, Workers Museum, Oppenheimer Towers and Credo Muthwa Village, Wits). Training requirement: matric, literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Housekeepers x 10 (Meredale, Vaal Marina, Vereeniging, Pretoria). Training requirement: able to clean, friendly and warm personality, qualification in housekeeping and room management will be an added advantage.
  • Tour guides x 6 (Maropeng). Training requirement: post-grade 12 qualification, working towards qualification, NQF level 2 culture guide training and registered with GTA.
  • Commis chefs x 4 (Vereeniging). Training requirement: cooking skills, able to work under pressure.
  • Tourism marketing officers x 4 (Meredale, Sandton, Johannesburg). Training requirement: degree or diploma in marketing and management, understand and implement booking systems, marketing skills and product destination marketing, computer literacy.
  • General workers x 4 (Sandton). Training requirement: communication skills.
  • Security receptionists x 3 (Vaal Marina). Training requirement: basic security training, computer literate, telephone skills, courteous, warm and friendly person.
  • Night clerks x 3 (Sandton). Training requirement: well-groomed, friendly, good communication skills, Opera, computer skills, telephone skills.
  • Office administrators x 3 (Sandton and Midrand). Training requirement: well-groomed and presented, friendly, communication skills, very organised, basic computer skills, telephone skills.
  • Accounts administrators x 3 (Sandton). Training requirement: filing, basic computer skills, telephone skills, organised, good people skills, presentation skills.
  • Food and beverages x 3 (Midrand and Vereeniging). Training requirement: candidates should have completed a hospitality diploma or degree.
  • Switchboard operators x 2(Vereeniging). Training requirement: computer skills, telephone skills, well-spoken, well-presented.
  • Human resource administrators x 2 (Sandton). Training requirement: HR qualification, filing, basic computer skills, telephone skills, organised, good people skills, presentation skills.
  • Reservations administrators x 2 (Vereeniging). Training requirement: computer skills, telephone skills, well-spoken, well-presented.
  • Plumbers x 2 (Sandton). Training requirement: knowledge of SANS 151, 10106, 10254, 1307, 10252, registered with PIRB.
  • Ticket office assistants X 2 (Maropeng). Training requirement: computer skills, telephone skills, fluent in English.
  • Carpenters x 2 (Sandton). Training requirement: building knowledge.
  • Tourism officers x 2 (Johannesburg, Soweto, Park Station). Training requirement: computer skills, telephone skills, well-spoken, tourism qualification.
  • Demi chefs x 2 (Vaal Marina). Training requirement: must be able to work under pressure and be a team player, cooking diploma.
  • Barmen x 2 (Vaal Marina, Vereeniging). Training requirement: candidate must be a warm, friendly and courteous person and be able to work under pressure.
  • Meeting and events co-ordinator x 1 (Sandton). Training requirement: well-groomed and presented, friendly, communication skills, very organised, computer skills, telephone skills.
