THE closing date for nominations for the Halala Joburg Awards has been extended to 17 February to allow more organisations, professional bodies and projects to be considered.

The Halala awards are a new initiative by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to recognise extraordinary efforts made by private and public concerns to regenerate the inner city.

This is the first year the awards will take place but the JDA confirms that they will be an annual event. Nominations can be made in five different categories:

  • Living Joburg - residential accommodation developments for lower and upper income groups;
  • Working and Buying Joburg - commercial developments of retail and offices;
  • Relaxing and Playing Joburg - recreational use of public spaces;
  • Caring Joburg - social welfare interventions in the inner city; and
  • Believing in Joburg - innovators, investors and believers in the inner city.

The awards will look for projects and developments that show originality and pioneering work, and which encourage participation, equality and inclusivity in the community. Forming partnerships and initiating joint projects that contribute to social harmony are other considerations.

The JDA has already received more than 80 nominations. Lael Bethlehem, the agency's chief executive, said the awards came about because the public was often unaware of the exciting projects taking place in the inner city. She hoped that they would encourage a sentiment of "I can do that too" among individuals and companies, prompting them to consider investing in the inner city as well.

An agency of the City of Johannesburg, the JDA strives to stimulate and support economic development initiatives throughout the metropolitan area. It is involved in a number of projects, among them Kliptown's refurbishment, upgrades in the greater Ellis Park precinct, and developments in Newtown and at Constitution Hill.

Halala Joburg Award winners will be announced at a gala event hosted by Executive Mayor Amos Masondo. Full details and nomination forms are available on the Johannesburg Development Agency website or from Sammy Mafu at the JDA on 011 688 7851.
