THIS hip bar-lounge-restaurant creates its ambience with an African
jazz theme. Patrons are eased into the velvety armchairs and sofas that
face the large flat-screen TV. The smart casual dress code makes it an
exclusive hangout and it is distinctly aimed at the classy
30-something. And the black and silver bar adds to its hip ambiance.
For jazz lovers, there are live performances once a month by
upcoming groups and by the big names as well, such as Jabu Khanyile,
Steve Kekana and Joe Nina.
The restaurant was established in April 2005 and has quickly
gained a reputation for being slicker than most. However, it retains
some of that Sowetan quality locals will appreciate. The service is
attentive and friendly, and the food is a good blend of Sowetan and
colonial cuisine.
Meat is the mainstay of the menu and is normally served grilled
or stewed on the buffet. Prices differ according to the days of the
week. On weekdays buffets are R40 per person, R60 if you include
dessert. On weekends, the buffet costs an extra R10.
Meat platters are served from Friday to Sunday evenings for R70
and come with fried fish, pap and chakalaka. Meals can also be enjoyed
at the bar. And for those familiar with English food, there are dishes
such as cauliflower cheese, three-bean salad, apple crumble and jelly
and ice cream.
Make The Backroom an evening excursion, when the party mood sets in.
