Much of the southern part of the region is underdeveloped and a lot of focus has been placed on economic development in the area. Towards the northwest, the rapid expansion of residential developments means the need for increased social infrastructure.

Meanwhile, social facilities in the south of the region, towards central Roodepoort, are under-utilised because of economic decline in the area. The City has since created an improvement district, hoping its efforts will persuade business to return.

It is also hoped that the facilities that will be built as part of Cosmo City will go a long way towards improving the number and quality of social amenities.
