WATER supply will be interrupted for few hours around Johannesburg and Soweto as technicians carry out maintenance work on water and sanitation infrastructure.

Johannesburg Water, the City's water and sanitation service provider, has announced the dates, times and names of places that will be affected by the scheduled water cuts.

According to Baldwin Matsimela, the utility's spokesperson, water and sanitation infrastructure, including pipes and reservoirs, has to be maintained to counter problems such as bursts and leakages. "If we do not maintain our infrastructure, we run the risk of providing an unreliable service to our customers."

Technicians will be out in full force repairing pipes and replacing stolen manhole covers to ensure that infrastructure is in "good working condition". The maintenance programme also helps the utility to measure its "capacity".

Soweto
There will be no water in Meadowlands on Thursday, 17 January, when a new pipe will be connected that will cut the number of bursts in the area. The interruptions will last from 7.30am to 5.30pm.

The affected areas are Zone 6 on Heald, Forbes and Vincent roads. In Zone 8 there will no water on Molope Street, Forbes Road and in the south of the old Tailing Dam.

Johannesburg
In Johannesburg, the scheduled water cuts will take place on Sunday, 20 January for maintenance work to be carried out in Wynberg. The interruptions will last from 2pm to 11pm.

The affected areas are Wendywood, Woodmead and its extensions, Kelvin, Gallo Manor, Wynberg, Bramley, Marlboro and its extentions, Eastgate and its extensions, Kramerville, The Woodlands, Wesco Park, Harrowdene, and Khyber Rock.

Matsimela says Wynberg is the main feeder for water in these areas. "All these areas draw water from Wynberg."

Water tankers will be placed around all the affected areas, he says.

"Johannesburg Water wishes to apologise to the residents of all the affected areas and undertakes to have the interruptions resolved as soon as possible."
